I have mixed feelings about this, but needless to say I am still curious.

Having played the PC horror experience when it was taking the internet by storm, I enjoyed the intense and creepy atmosphere that the game created, truly making you feel like a child lost in the woods, running from some unseen enemy.

Turns out, however, this isn’t the first attempt at telling this story. While the low-budget indie game was able to capture the collective hearts of internet users, a slue of low-budget films have not. When researching this film, I came across several titles using the Slender Man lore, one even as recent as last month, according to IMDb. None of these films, most with a budget under $10,000, have been able to attract a following in the same way that the game did (most likely because they are garbage, modern day horror films).

Yet, despite the ever-abundance of jump-scare extravaganzas that have been haunting our cinemas for the past decade, I believe the genre is beginning to get smart again. Just in the last two years, we saw titles such as It FollowsThe Babadook, and even The Witch take on the lore of monsters that lurk in the darkness, unseen with a much more intelligent and frightening approach. If the filmmakers for this new Slender Man film take this approach, we could have a great horror film on our hands.

But, with a popular following behind it, there could also be pressure on studios to make it more of your generic, modern main-stream scare flick, with less subtlety and more jumpy, jolting horror. And, with a monster that preys on children, I would bet you my left kidney that this film falls into the trope of using creepy children for no reason.

As of now, there is no word on who the director for this film would be, but the movie does have a  a screenwriter, David Burke. I hope they pick a decent director in order to give this film a fair shake. I would love to see a director like David Robert Mitchell take a stab at this film, though I doubt he will be considered since he has his hands full with his newest noir project Under The Silver Lake.

God deliver us if they give it to Eli Roth.
