With the modern movie landscape filled with reboots and re-imaginings, it feels right that something so far out there in concept would break the mold and give us something fresh. Well, as fresh as a movie about a man and his friend, a corpse, can be.

In a way, it makes sense. It’s hard to really make out what “Swiss Army Man” will really be from the trailers. Is it a comedy, a-la “Weekend at Bernie’s” style? Is it a whimsical, trippy movie about the joys and beauty of life? It could be, with its indie, hipster vibe, but you also can’t ignore the absurdness or seeing Paul Dano riding Daniel Radcliffe like a jet ski, looking like Harry Potter when he triumphantly rode Buckbeak through the grey, cloudy sky (my, how the tables have turned, Daniel).

There are moments in the trailer where I can’t tell if I am smiling from absurdity or starring in utter horror and how dark the whole thing also comes off as. After all, its a man toting around a dead corpse on an island. For all we know, Radcliffe’s character is no more than Wilson the volley ball and this could all be in Dano’s head. Never the less, I see this as a film that will probably have two crowds: those who love it and those who are absolutely do not.

But, with all this, I have high hopes for this film and, in turn, the future of original scripts. With a superb and well-known cast, as well as an out-there music video visionaries Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (the team behind the “Turn Down for What” music video), I think that there is enough intrigue here to pull in an audience. And if it does well, we can start to see a shift in the film industry towards these unique stories. I am thoroughly excited to see this film, if not also a little hesitant with the confusing tone I am getting from the trailer.
